About
From Berkeley, California. Learning to find home anywhere.
I’ve been a freelance writer for over a decade, but have come to fiction fairly recently. This was partly thanks to the lovely MWRIT (Master of Writing) program at the University of Canterbury in Aotearoa New Zealand, and partly because exploring the world and feeling globally unsettled* has left me with all sorts of thoughts and feelings that it’s easier to process through writing fiction.
In addition to my MA in Writing from the University of Canterbury, I hold a BA in English from the University of California at Berkeley, where I won the H. W. Hill Prize for “outstanding English majors.” My fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in DreamForge, Stanchion, Aurealis, Solarpunk Creatures, and others.
In my writing, I love exploring the experience of place, largely because I’ve felt so disconnected from having a true home. I also tend to look for reasons to hope (even though they often feel hard to find), which has led to much of my short fiction taking place in a solarpunk future, or at least leaning in that direction. When I’m not writing, I’m generally exploring the world of snobbish tea, trying to convince two rescued giant mastiffs that they really don’t fit in my lap, and cooking recipes from all over the world.
*Long story short: my husband and I don’t have citizenship or residency in the same countries. For the past six years, we’ve been working on changing that… while making do on tourist visas, student visas, post-study work visas, and whatever else we can manage. Of course, this involves moving to different countries as necessary to fit the visa situation, which we can only manage because we both work online. We’ve lived together in the US, Brazil, New Zealand, and now Portugal, and have traveled through other countries in between.
